Benefits for Victorians

Unclaimed money

Each year in Victoria millions of dollars lose contact with their rightful owners. These funds are lodged with the SRO while they wait to be claimed.

Unclaimed money includes share dividends, salaries and wages, rents and bonds, debentures and interest, unpresented cheques and trust moneys.

The SRO also holds unclaimed winnings from Tattslotto, Intralot and TAB tickets bought in Victoria which have remained unclaimed for six months or more. In the past financial year, the SRO processed 56,397 claims for unclaimed money, reuniting rightful owners with $17.74m.

* Legislative changes signicantly increased claims received in 2009-10 and 2010-11. In 2011-12, claims reduced partly due to the SRO no longer administering superannuation entitlements.

FHOG and other bonuses

Eligible first-home buyers are offered a duty reduction when they buy a new or established home.

The duty reduction applies on a principal place of residence valued at not more than $600,000 and where the settlement date is on or after 1 July 2011.

The Victorian Government brought forward the next instalment of duty reduction – 40 per cent – with effect from 1 July 2013, with the next instalment of 10 per cent due on 1 September 2014.

In 2013-14, 16,476 FHOG grants were paid to Victorian home buyers, totalling $130.79 million.
